Elecrtical Power loss in 760 Turbo Wagon 700

Recently I had a situation while on a short journey , my ABS light xame on & then I noticed wipers slow and lights dim as engine started to idle rough. I reached my destination, let the wagon sit for a while. Figured I'd try and start it before calling the AAA. It started & the lights seemed OK. As soon as I hit the highway the ABS light came on again and once again the lights started to dim but car kept running until I spotted a service station which I decided to pull ingto and as I
was doing so the lights returned & the car started running normally with once exception - the speedometer had spun around full clockwise and stopped at the pin
the odometer was working normally & I decided to try for home which I arrived at perplexed. Yesterday I had the problem again and pulled out a voltmeter and checked the battery at around 11 volts. I looked at the wiring coming off the alternator ground lug to the chassis connection and saw the insulation was bubbled. I jiggled the wire at which point the battery woltage jumped to 13 indicating the thing was charging..The wire felt warm/hot to the touch & I jumpered around it with a pair on leads and it too was hot...This looks like improper or failed grounding of the alternator..I think that there must be more than one negative return off the alternator to the chassis Forgive my loong winded question but do any of you have and ideas or suggestions..

Thanx

Michael Kaye
