handbrake cabling... 700 1992

Volvo 940 GLE B234F 1992 canadian model

I was pulling on the handbrake kind of hard and it let go... doh.

Having never worked with handbrake cables, I didn't really know where to look.

I noticed it broken under the car, along the rear axle going to the driver's wheel. It looks like the cable connects to some type of pivoting braket and then to another cable going to the wheel... I don't get it, I wish I had a diagram of how this was. Is there a diagram anywhere?

The broken cable was not the small one going to the wheel but the one before that. Does that go all the way to the handbrake lever?

What about the passenger side? It surely feels like the lever is 100% dead. how did the passenger side give away?

Please explain how this is connected, and what I need to buy. My wife/kids have no emergency brake.

Thanks!
