Airconditioner problem 900 1995

I've a 95 964 at 37000 miles.
I seem to have a problem with the airconditioner.
When I start the car, the compressor will will operate in aproximately four second cycles. It will engage for four seconds and then disengage for about ten seconds.
The air coming from the dash ducts seems to be somewhat below the ambient temperature, but it is definitely not close to the 40-some degree normal.
I don't see any obvious leakage at any of the fittings.
I'd appreciate some input as to what I should ask of a shop. Should I ask for a recharge and hope that it's an eight year diminishing of freon (possible?), or should I throw myself at their mercy and hope for a straightforward assessment and repair?
