I have a 1988 740 5 Speed with an M47 manual transmission (true 5 speed, NOT overdrive). About a week ago, I posted a message about some unusual transmission noises. (See message entitled Transmission / Clutch Noise) Thanks for the responses!
Over the past week, I have spoken with many Volvo mechanics and the consensus is to avoid a bearing replacement job because the parts are just too expensive and instead find a used transmission with low miles.
I have been able to locate a few low mileage transmissions--unfortunately, they are all 4 speed manuals with overdrive). With the overdrive assembly, the 4 speed is about 7 inches longer than my M47 transmission. Is it possible to replace an M47 with a 4 speed/overdrive? Will the 4 speed/overdrive gear shift knob come through the same hole as the M47 knob? Is it possible to use the driveshaft from a 4 speed/overdrive-equipped 740 and slip it into my car, or will some special adaptation be needed? Will I have an electrical problem hooking up the overdrive--will I even be able to hook up the overdrive? In short, what drivetrain or electrical problems will I encounter?
If an 4 speed/overdrive is out of the question, does anyone have any leads as to where I might find an M47? Is there a nationwide database of parts in junkyards? If so, would you know how to access the database? Also, does anyone know how long the M47s were available in the US, and the Volvo models they were available for? This could help me broaden my search of donor cars. I believe they were introduced in 1988, but I am not sure when they were phased out. My 740 is not a turbo--is there any difference between an M47 for a turbo and an M47 for a non-turbo?
Thanks,
Jane740
