The very first improvement would definitely be the 4 speed manual transmission conversion. Injection would probably help a little....

Where are you located? I have in my grubby little hands right now a complete '72 164 with both fuel injection, and a 4speed with OD. Everything you need and its fairly cheap. But... not if you are too far away. I'm a little ways north of Denver in Colorado.
