Cracked dash mitigation 700 1990

I thought I might escape the dreaded 740 cracked dash syndrome until I saw the beginnings of some cracks at the stesss points the other day. I have not used Armorall products and I have slathered the dash with McGuires(sp?) products in the past. I even bought a dash cover to protect it from the sun. Ah well. If I could stress relieve the crack areas I might be able to stop the spread. Has anyone ever been successful at mitigating the problem? I have thought of:
a) Taking a heat gun to the area to gently head it up to let the plastic give a little.
b) drilling a hole at the crack ends to spread out the stress. Then fill with some plastic resin and colour match and texturize it.

I suppose someone has tried this and more without success, otherwise it would be in the FAQ.
