960 3rd brake light 900 1993

This may sound simple, but I can't get the (tan) cover off of the sedan's 3rd brake light. The entire unit easily comes off of the bracket that holds it against the back window. But, the cover that needs to come off to change the bulb is another story. I have pulled, lifted, squeezed, pried to the point that the cover is now shattering. I don't want to do any more until I know how to get it off properly or am able to find a replacement (can't find a tan cover). Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
