Brick overheats when I turn on aftermarket electric fan! 200 1980

I installed an aftermarket electric fan, in front of the radiator, that I can turn off and on manually. I left the original water pump/mechanical fan in place. The car runs fine without the electric fan (ie in off position). The other day, it was hot, so I turned on the electric fan. The temp gauge shot up beyond the center. I immediately shut off the fan. Since shutting off the fan, the car has not overheated. I don't understand why the fan has the opposite effect. It's electric and stationary in front of the radiator.
