My 90 940Turbo has been relatively trouble free after the initial since purchase problems were sorted out - AC, shocks, a few bulbs, etc. But for about a month now the engine has been stalling, though that's an incomplete description.
Cold starts are fine, but after 10-15 minutes of driving it will seem to buck, ie, the tach drops to "zero" concurrent with a small lurch, and then back to normal. This continues for a few minutes and then the engine either stops, or will not restart if I turn the ignition off. If I wait a few (literally only 2-3 miniutes) it will start up and continue with this intermittant off/on, etc. When it restarts, the tach will remain at "zero" and then finally move a bit, stay at "zero", move, etc., while the engine "tries to start", and then starts and runs fine until it starts repeating again.
Seems to me to be an electrical, not fuel delivery problem. Previous responses have recommended checking the FI relay (opened, checked visually, and every solder connection is perfect) and the crank position sensor. That's been replaced with no change in symptoms. I only know one other possibility (my limited knowledge) - the (so called) RF-Interference relay. Questions: can that be checked, or does it either work or fail with no degrading; and, what are other possibilities and how would I check them? eg, would a failing coil be intermittant and recover rapidly..... I'm going to stop before my head explodes. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated.
