It died tonight...any ideas... 700 1987

87 740 Turbo SW @ 230k

My wagon died on the drive home tonight...after about 20min of hwy driving the car seem to be running a little rough and then wouldn't re-start. Battery seemed dead. Jumped it and the car started right up. I noticed the charge gauge was barely reading anything, so I'm think' in alternator is toast, but I try and get home (~15min). After about 10min the car has barely any power and is sort of sputtering...I pull off the road and I've got smoke coming out of the engine compartment and the rear of the car...I look under and the whole exhaust system was glowing read...from front to rear...so hot that's it was burning the undercoating.

I'm having the car towed as I type...What do I have to look forward too!!
