Intermittent starting problems after changing catalytic converter 700 1991

Almost a year ago I changed the catyltic converter on my 1991 745GL with about 150K. Right after changing it I couldn't get it started it at all.(how I got it started was by taking the gas cap off and it started up). So for a year I have been having this starting problem on and off, and taking the gas cap off does make it start. Most of the time I have to squirt ether in to the intake and than it starts. A couple of weeks ago I took a a 3000 mile trip to North Carolina and the car ran perfect(No starting problems) accept I noticed that it was making a rattling sound in the lower gears like the new catyltic convert is breaking down. Now that I'm home again it's back to having intermittent starting problems(almost always when the car is cold). Could the new catalytic converter be breaking down? or be defective since I bought it to cause the starting problem.

Thanks for any help.

Mike
