Temp compensation board question 200 1993

I finally got around to taking out my instrument cluster and took out the temp compensation board. I used the photos on this forum and soldered a jumper between pins one and three. I put the cluster back in the car and neither my gas guage or temp guage works. (does this method of jumping the pins really work?) My gas guage worked perfect before and my temp guage worked but just had goofy readings. I noticed when I was putting the cluster back in there was an extra wire. It was a red and white wire with a female end. I did have to take this wire off when I was taking it out. Is this for the tach option? What could be making both of my guages to not work? Ground? and if so where is it? How do I test these guages? Thanks for you help.
