Trouble with 52mm tach 200 1990

I installed a 52mm tach on my 240 this weekend, but it is not operating correctly. When idling it indicates that the rpm is around 100. When accelerating it never gets much beyond 1000. Do I have the wrong type of tach (my car is an automatic), or is it some other problem? I thought of maybe measuring the voltage of the wire from the coil that connects to the back of the gauge to see if I could determine if the tach is faulty, but I'm not sure what value I should be seeing. Any pointers would be appreciated.
