why do things break just AFTER I leave? 200 1989

so I just drove home today from Waterloo, Ontario to Bluffton, Ohio (5 hour drive)after returning to canada from a wonderful month in Europe. Anyways, My '86 240 made it home no problem, but my girlfriend's 240, which is still in Waterloo with her, now has issues, of course just hours after I left. It is having problems idling...apparently it drives ok, but when she comes to a stoplight or something it sputters for a bit then dies. basically the idle just doesn't work. So what are most likely causes? my first guesses are IAC valve or throttle body position sensor? Her dad thinks it might be the catalytic converter, but I don't know. It's an '89, so it has the wonderful diagnostics thing, but it hasn't been checked yet. any good ideas? Thanks agian in advance
