speedometer cable problems 200 1981

"I can't unscrew the cap on the cable end because it keeps spinning around so i make no progress"
Oh, okay. when you removed the bolt was there a metal plate that came off with it? Perhaps if you replaced the plate and bolt it will hold the unit from turning while you loosen the cap with vise grips.

If you have a haynes manual check page 7a-5 (also 7b-4 and 12-15). According to the book there are "machined flats on the bearing housing" which you unscrew with a wrench to access the gear. Maybe that plate hits against the machined flat and stops it from turning while you unscrew the cap? Or you can hold the housing with a wrench while you turn the cap?

I'll crawl under my car later today and see if I can make any futher suggestions later.
