expansion valve tubing insulation stuff... 200 1989

As part of the A/C system retrofit, I did the expansion valve & o-rings this afternoon.

I removed all the back sticky stuff (insulation). Man what a mess.

I assume that is there to prevent condensation and hence dripping. Is that true? Is it needed for the functionality of the system and temp measurement of the valve or anything else?

What should I use to insulate again? Would any home thermal insulation wrapping be OK coving in tape?
