'Ticking' sound/feel from shifter - 94 945T - what is this? 900

Hi guys - can you please help me figure this out? My 94 945T (110k) recently developed this ticking sound that seems to be coming from the shifter, or internally in the shifter where it attaches to the tranny. It only occurs in DRIVE. What's happening is the ticking is consistent with engine RPMs, and is really noticeable upon decellaration - the strange part, is when I pull on the shifter (can't remember if to the left or the right), the ticking stops. If I pull to the other side, it increases in volume.

What it reminds me of, the sound - years ago I had a friend of mine with a 70s malibu classic, and while driving forward, he threw it in park - the tranny didn't lock up, but you got this harsh 'tick tick tick' from the tranny that decreased with engine RPMs until we stoped the car.

The volvo ticking from the shifter is not harsh like that at all - the only thing similar is that it increases/decreases with engine speed.

What does this sound like? Shifter bushings? It started suddenly - and I have not noticed any other issues with the tranny. The shifter does not feel sloppy either. Thanks!
