Overheating unless heater is on a little bit (not so nice during summer) 200

OK, I tried to search the archives, but apparently because of the move there is a little difficulty in that, so don't think I'm just lazy. :) My '87 245 heats up when sitting still, and sometimes when cruising on the highway, she has no leaks, my Volvo guy even confirmed that, that pressure tested the system and it was fine, I have an electric fan (which shouldn't do anything about the heat at highway speeds). However, she doesn't seem to have any problem if I turn the temp control just slightly over to heat. I seem to remember having read about bypassing some hose so that the water circulates through the head when the heater valve is not open, something like a design flaw. I might have been misunderstanding what I read, but can't find what I was looking at to confirm. Any info? Happy Brickin'.
