B230FT engine noise / vibration? 900 1993

I noticed that at above 2800 RPM the noise is so loud it completely drowns out any bass sound from the stock stereo (drive/coast/neutral).

Are they normally much noisier than 960's, or comparable engines (I own a couple of Merkur XR4ti's, also 2.3L turbo 4 cyl. engines, and they are much quieter)? Does anyone have data on cabin noise level (in dB) at various speeds?

Will replacing engine and transmission mounts improve the matter? Speaking of which, how does one know it's time to replace the mounts? (The car has 165K, can't find record indicating they've been replace during the previous ownership.)

Thanks,
Lih-Yen
