I always replace my headlights in pairs. Then I box the working one and put it in the trunk for an emergency spare.

They cost less than twenty bucks for a pair at Wal Mart (for decent headlights). I drive with my headlights on all the time. In other words, the switch that turns them off, never sees the "off" position. I almost never replace a bulb anywhere in the car, for whatever reason. Headlights either. So when I do, I just buy two of them. Besides when you mismatch them, you can tell just looking at the car (usually). The new one is almost always much brighter.
