Exhaust repair question

Anybody know if a small patch of metal can be welded onto an exhaust pipe to fill a pinkey-finger sized hope in the pipe?\

My '89 turbo has such a small hole infront of the rear silencer at the joint that I can't see breaking apart the system for a new over-the-axle pipe on an older system that will probably last another year with this patch.

Some knuckle head didn't seal up this joint upon installation when new and the escaping exhaust gasses ate it out from the outside. rust is moderate. the metal is genuine Volvo.

I figure the hole and the joint can be all welded up at once.
