Geez! How nuts is this, i've got the exact same problem on my 84.. I ended up having 1 good ground in the wiring and jumpered the switch so it would work. What's really annoying is that it works great for the passenger, but being the driver I can't control it. I am eagerly awaiting some advice as well! Thx for asking the question I forgot about...
