Look for the fittings on the compressor (or if you are lucky, in a better location). R12 fittings are threaded externally, with a small gray (usually) cap. R134a fittings are not threaded externally but look like air hose quick relaease fittings. They are threaded internally and do have a red and blue cap. Threaded internally sounds weird but the cap is a male thread and the fitting female.
