Need help, 1990 740 A/C blower 700

I hope you guys can help. My wife has a 1990 740 wagon, non-turbo. The blower for the heating / cooling system has been squeaking really bad on anything but lowest speed. I was gonna replace the fan this weekend, HONEST!, BUT a couple of days ago, BAM, the fan broke. I got a new fan from Volvo. When I removed the old broken fan, I found that the squirrel cage had broken into 3 pieces. I got TWO of them out. Still left inside, somewhere, is a piece of the squirrell cage about 3 inches wide. I could not find it anywhere. So, I put the new fan in, hooked everthing back up. The new fan works GREAT, it is really quiet. But, the problem is that no air is coming from any of the vents. You can here air, but almost no air movement. Everything was working great prior to an cage failure. Could this missing piece of squirrell cage be blocking a damper door?
I hope my question made sense.
Thanks,
Tony p
