Clutch engages/releases high 200 1988

Hi,
My 88 240 DL (133,000 mi I'm the original owner) has a high clutch engage/release point. Shifting is smooth and the clutch does not slip. However, my 16 year old son is about to inherit this car and he is early on the learning curve for a standard transmission. So I want to get the clutch closer to mid-pedal engage point. To make it easier for him to learn how to drive it. I tried using my Haynes manual instructions to adjust the cable with the nylon nut by the lever coming out of the bell housing. I couldn't figure out how it adjusts and was afraid of breaking the nut.

I took the car to a local repair shop (not volvo specialists) that I've found to be reliable. They said the clutch has no more adjustment and needs to be replaced. Does that sound right?
