Thanks for the input, Kenric.

After double checking with my brother, he reminded me that the car ran much worse with the AMM disconnected. Once you pointed out my error it all made sense, as I had dismissed the AMM as a possible cause.

The good news is he lives directly across the street from a decent Volvo dealer, and they've diagnosed a clogged cat. He and I talked about that before it went in, and we prefer that sort of failure to an electrical problem.
