Hammy:
It's been my experience (four of the five cars I have with A/C) that the Schrader valve cores at the service ports on the compressor are usually the source of the leak. My advice would be to replace these for sure (you only need two; I buy a card of five at Auto Zone for $3.99) before you do anything else. Then proceed as Steve R. suggests. If you have a minor leak at an O-ring, the R-134 with "stop leak" product can sometimes take care of this. Also something to check is the ground wire for the compressor. It goes to the same terminal on the engine block as the battery ground wire. Check that the wire is intact and the terminal is clean. Finally, if you get the system tight and charged and confirm compressor clutch function by (briefly) jumping it with 12V, but the system still won't operate using the switch inside the car, I found some bad solder joints on the circuit board inside the control unit of my wife's '91 744. Just like a fuel pump relay; resolder the board and the problem was cured.
