Rear Window Defroster 200

Hello Volvo Friends,

When I press the rear window defroster button on the dash of my 1989 240 GL, what should I expect to happen? What happens currently is it just bounces right back and no lights come on or anything. I tried holding it and it looks like the defroster was working on the fog on my back window. I'm not sure what happens if I press and do not hold it.
