Another 240 Overdrive Problem 200 1986

I have an '86 240DL with an overdrive that went out about a year ago. At first it would come and go ,but now it is permanently disabled. The arrow on the instrument panel is always on and the button on the shifter previously gave no response at all when I used it. Tonight, I took out the relay and opened it up to look for cracks or anything wrong and found nothing so I put it back in. NOW, there is a response when I hit the OD button on the shifter. There is a 'click' and the arrow light on the inst. panel dims a little. Is that click coming from the relay? Does that mean that the relay is now working but that it might be the solenoid?...Or does that confirm that the relay is faulty because when I messed with it, the OD problem changed its symptoms?
