91 240 wagon 'check engine light' keeps coming on

HELP! I just got a '91 240SE wagon and I love it, but I'm starting to get worried that it's going to be a continuing service nightmare. Seemed to be running fine, but check engine light came on and stayed on. Mechanic charged me $60 to plug it in to diagnostics which apparently said, "adjust engine specifications". I don't know what, if anything he did, but he reset light and it was off for a few days, but went back on this morning. Still seems to be running fine. Any ideas of what I should do about this?? Thanks!
