My _________ ? is whining

I just installed a new (used) transmission (from a 92 240 into an 89 780) and there is some sort of whining noise coming from what I think is the transmission. The car starts out running very nicely at idle, and drives well when cold. As soon as it starts to warm up, I get the whining noise. While test driving it I actually started getting very severe hesitation while shifting (extrememly late shifts from D to N to R, etc). I also noticed that when the car starts making this noise, something in the area of the exhaust starts smoking/steaming but I dont know what it is, as it stops almost immediately after I stop the engine. Any ideas?
