What good is the BATTERY light on my dash if it doesn't come on when the alt. quits? 200

Belly brickers.

My alternator went out due to either the regulator or the brushes and the only way I knew this was when it wouldn't crank....at the post office.

I did know that when this happens all of the idiot lights will be out when the key is in the on position/engine off but how will you know that the alt. stops charging when going down the road.

I guess thats why they are called idiot lights.

I am looking for a voltmeter to install so this won't happen to me again.
