Intermittent alternator problem fixed for less than $1.00. 85 245 DL 200

Hello Brickers.

I finally found the nagging gremlin in my charging system.
The problem was that the alt would sometimes stop charging while driving.
I had to get it jumped off after going to the Post Office the other day after only driving for about 30 min. It seemed that sometimes it would work fine and other times it would just be running off of the battery. I do not have a guage, only the idiot light.
When this is happening all of the idiot lights will not work....key on/engine off.

After relacing the regulator and brushes the problem persisted.

finally last night when it happened again and I checked the idiot light (BATTERY) bulb on the dash because someone here had given me that advice but the light was good. I installed another known good bulb anyway but still not working. Also just to let you know the wiring harness has been replaced and from the top all of the alternator wiring looked good.

After checking the circuitry I decided the alt. was bad so I began calling the parts stores for a price.

I thought I would remove the alt. to see if it was something I could fix on my own when I found the problem.

What I found was that the ground strap on the bottom of the alt. was broken and I figure it was arching and would fuse itself back to the terminal but eventually would break off again.
I figured this because of the arched burn marks on the wire and terminal.

The alt. is pretty much mounted on rubber to keep vibration down so the ground strap is a very necessary. Its about a 10 ga. wire.

I removed the wire, resoldered a new terminal connector and I am back in business.

This was a really easy fix once I found the problem.

Thanks to everyone that helped me on this.

Life is good.
