Speedometer works sometimes - likely culprit? 700 1986

I have a 1986 745GLE NA. Most of the time the speedometer doesn't work (reads 0mph) then all of the sudden it will read the correct speed. All of the other gauges on the dash are working fine when the speedo isn't.

I have unplugged the connector to the sending unit on the rear axle and tested for a good connection to the connector near the spare wheel inside the car. It seems OK, even when bending the wire under the car. The insulation on the wire to the sending unit seems fine.

I have heard that resoldering the ground(?) connections at the instrument cluster has helped others with their speedo problems. I am not sure that this would help in my case since all of the other gauges work fine all of the time. (ie. is it the same ground?)

Any ideas? Or tips on diagnosing?

Thanks,
Steve
