Why did my muffler blow up??? 200 1979

Hello.
I was going about 70 mph on the freeway and I heard a loud bang toward the rear of my 79 245dl. The engine didn't skip a beat and there was no loss of performance. I thought something had just hit the underbody. When I got off the freeway and stopped, I could hear the exhaust leak. Upon examination of the rear muffler, I noticed the whole top seem of the muffler had been blown open. The muffler was no longer cylinder shaped. My car still runs fine, but now I have to replace my muffler if I don't want to listen to the exhaust leak.
What would cause this sudden combustion in my muffler??
Thanks in advance,
Sam
