Tappet rattle hot engine 200 1993

Hi, I have a 240 with the B230FX motor. When driven on the highway for while and then come off, at lights the engine rattles. At first I thought it was the fuel injectors but when I take off the oil filler cap on the rocker cover the noise is louder. It sounds like the tappets. The mechanic is not sure - does anyone know what it might be. It is not a pinging noise, but is relative to the engine revs.
