The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly. 200 1987

'87 240, B230F, 150k miles. Kept leaking oil from camshaft seal, despite two replaced seals. I swear I could replace those front end seals with my eyes closed by now. There is oil everywhere in that dang engine compartment. It's ugly.

The bad thing is a hole about the size of a pencil eraser in the head behind the seal, below the camshaft bearing surface. It looks like a thin spot from a casting problem. It's also possible some clutz punched out the hole when removing one of the leaky seals. Hole leads to an oil gallery which means oil under some pressure escapes and puts too much pressure on tne oil seal which then leaks.

Now the good. The valves and valve seats appear to be in great shape. There is hardly any carbon buildup on the head or on the piston tops. I can see cross-hatching in the cylinder walls!!!

I'm assuming I need new: head bolts, head gasket, intake and exhaust gaskets, valve cover gasket. Is there anything else I should be doing preventatively now that I have the head at the welding shop getting the hole plugged?
