I need to replace the o-ring on the oil pickup tube on my wife's '94 965. The oil pan has to be removed (6 hours+). I have ordered the pickup tube o-ring & the two other o-rings used in the oil pan/block interface, as well as the special gasket goop material used between the pan & the block.
The basic plan I have so far is to get the car up on jack stands & drop, but not remove the front axle crossmember. It can be more or less left hanging from the strut suspension. The steering also has to be disconnected (from the subframe?) & left hanging or something like that. Some blocks have to be put in somewhere on the sides of the pan to maintain an adequate working distance. With all of this, there is supposed to be just enough room to finagle the pan out from the car. After this , the o-rings are a snap, and the oil pan is re-installed with the special gasket goop rolled to an even thin coat with a 1 to 2 inch rubber roller preferabley.
Are there any other machanics who would care to correct/clarify or add their experience to this? I just like to have as clear as possible an understanding before doing the job so as to avoid unwelcome surprises.
