1989 240DL 200 1989

My 1989 240dl will turnover but not fire. Have replaced ICU, checked fuses, etc. In-tank fuel pump is working. Car will intermittently fire, run for a few minutes then shutoff and not restart on a consistent basis. What else is there to check? Also, car smells as if it is running hot, but no indication on temperature gauge. Any ideas?
