DOT 4 Brake fluid color? 900 1995

recently purchased 95 940, 93k miles. PO had NO mech ability, but showed dealer stamped maintenance book with all scheduled maintenance performed. I replaced the front rotors and pads this weekend. Had to compress pistons to get caliper to fit over new rotors and pads. Checked brake fluid afterward, it seemed caramel brown instead of clear.

Could it be PO but in DOT 3? Should I flush it as soon as possible? How much will it take, one quart, two?

any advice, ideas or recommendations?
