Heat shield rattling drives me crazy!!! 200

Hi,

On my 88 240 DL, the sheet metal heat shielding around the exhaust pipes coming out of the manifold has broken free of its spot welding attachment to the exhaust pipes and it rattles like crazy at various engine rpm's. The exhaust pipe seems to be very sound without any leaks.

I'm wondering if I can just cut the durn thing off, or if by doing so I will run the risk of catching something on fire. I removed shielding from further back the pipe several years ago without incident. However, this shield is the one over the pipes just after they exit the exhaust manifold and they are closer to the engine compartment neighbors.

Has anyone had any experience trying to re-weld the shield? Or is there some other fix for this most annoying, irritating noise?
