Starter not Broken 200 1983

I thought I needed a new starter, since my was screeching every time I tried to start it. I read some past posts and discovered there's a way to test if it's the starter or maybe something in the ignition, so I put my gear in Neutral and started it that was. Everything worked great. So therefore I removed the gear shift cover and noticed the 2 screws on the right side holding a black plastic piece were a little loose and had moved the plastic piece back a little. I moved it forward and tighted them, put it in park. BINGO! Worked great and hasn't made the screeching sound in over 25 starts. I therefore moved the plastic piece back (just to be curious) where I found it and tried to start it in Park, Damn screeching back in 10 out of 10 starts. So I put the plastic piece forward and tighted screws and WOW, starts perfect everytime. I don't know what this piece is called and don't know why it would cause the starter screeching sound, but just wanted to warn others to put gear into N and try it that way and to say thanks to all of you for your posts.
