Several Starting Questions (a little long) 900 1995

Well, yesterday my 95 945T decided not to start. I have read through the FAQ numerous times and have done a search but still have a few questions.

Quick history first:
1. Cleaned throttle body for first time 2 weekends ago (very grimey)
2. Hooked up Air/Fuel meter to wire from O2 sensor in engine bay a few weeks ago (it didn't give good readings)
3. Replaced wiring with shielded wire directly from harness connection to ECU (seems to work better now) this past weekend
4. Just used bottle of Techron in fuel for first time this weekend

So, after working normally earlier in the day, I tried to start it yesterday at noon with no luck. The starter was cranking and I seemed to smell fuel but it did not catch.

Dad and I checked the spark plug wires using the antenna method and they were not getting spark. The coil had power going to it (measured 12V) but no impulse for spark (checked with O-scope).

Reading the FAQ, I understand that power comes from the ECU to the Power Stage to the coil which sends spark to the distributor. The RPM sensor on the flywheel tells the EZK that the engine is cranking and to send fuel from the fuel pump and spark (impulses) to the Power Stage.

Q1. Where is this mysterious power stage on my 945T? I have heard mention of it being behind the airbox but I cannot see it.
Q2. If I smelled fuel, then the RPM sensor was telling the EZK to send fuel. But the engine was not catching so I assume that the problem was no spark somewhere between the EZK and the coil. Is this a good assumption? Do Power Stages go intermittently bad?
Q3. When I took the ECU wiring harness off to do the A/F Meter wiring, I did not take out the Fuse 1 like I read about later in my horrible Chiltons. Could this do damage to the ECU?
Q4. After fiddling with everything (including the wiring to the ECU), the engine started up(!!!) but at a higher idle (1000-1100 RPM) instead of the normal 750 RPM. Any clues? This morning the idle seemed to be back down when I started it up.
Q5. When I started it up this morning, there was a metal on metal rubbing noise during starting that stopped when the engine caught. Dad seems to think this could be the starter bearings. Could I have worn them out from lots of cranking yesterday? Is the solution to this a new starter? How much and how hard a job to replace?

Thanks for any help you can give.
