A/C Question 1992 964 900

Finally had a warm enough day in Toronto to run A/C.
I set fan to auto and vents to auto and temp to 20 Celsius.
Immediately the fan speed kicked in on high and the outside air vent closed for max cooling. I drove on the highway for about 20 minutes and the cabin temp set itself nicely as both front and rear passengers were comfortable. The fan speed settled on a first or second position and the outside vent returned to the open position for fresh air. To me its seems that everything is working properly, but I am curious because last year In may I was told by the dealer that I needed a new evaporator due to a leak in the system ( the system was converted in Aug 2001 to the new refrigerant ) If there was a leak how could the system still be operating almost two years later??

I have heard of an additive that can be introduced to the A/C that will pulg tiny leaks, anyone familiar with this??
