Can I tow a trailer? 84 240 GL 200 1984

I have an 84 GL and am moving from Southern CA to WA. My car does not have a hitch so I am going to buy one (unless it is determined my car will fall apart) and rent one of the small u-haul trailers that you can pull behind your vehicle.

I am getting conflicting messages from people I ask. U-Haul says it's fine (of course, they want money). A couple friends say it's fine, others are convinced the car can't do it.

It has had a couple issues considering we bought it from idiots.
It was great, they say they rebuilt the transmission. The morons forgot to mount it. We replaced the exaughst system and found the transmission just sitting against a cross bar under the car. How lucky of us we never hit any really hard bumps.

So we need to have the transmission checked out, shifts hard from 1st and isn't shifting into 4th at all anymore.

So basically once the transmission is approved and the car gets a complete tune up, engine check, and new tires we want to go. But like I said everyone has their own opinion.

Also, since we're buying a hitch to attach to the car what kind to I need to get? I can't make much sense of what I am finding online. Is it pretty simple to install it myself?

Thanks!
