My mechanic can't fix this..... 900 1993

I have a 1993 960 wagon with 90k miles. Over the last two years it has developed a tendency to miss-fire when running under a light to moderate load (as when going up a moderate grade) at 1500-2200 rpm and at normal operating temperature. It will skip several times, run fine, then repeat. The fuel mileage has also dropped to an average of around 16 mpg combined highway/city, down from around 21.

Of course, my mechanic can't seem to duplicate the symtoms, so is at a loss as to what to look for. Any suggestions?
