Serious driveability probelms 700

When driving my car, (1988 740 GLE 5-speed), and I get to around 2400 RPM something very strange happens, its as if the engine stops working. It does not stall, but it is as if it is being strangled. I get no power no matter how hard I press the accelerator ( that usually makes it worse) my only solution for now is to press the clutch rev it slightly ( it revs freely when not in gear) and then upshift. The only time that i drove on the highway with this problem, my maximum speed was 60, but i started to burn oil, and had to back off. I have learned to drive under 2500 RPM for a while, but i need to get this fixed. Also sometimes when at idle, the engine shakes, causing the whole car to shake. I don't think this is related, but i could be wrong so i thought i'd mention it. If anyone could help with identifying this problem i would be very greatful. Also if i could get your input on if it is worth fixing, or if i should start saving for a newer car.

thanx for your time
