STEVE RINGLEE - 2nd OPINION - PLEASE 700 1992

Steve,
I think that was you that responded to my question a few days back on the head gasket - so I need your extended opinion, please. (other opinions welcome too)

What happened:
It ran hot - 5 minutes or so.
Mechanic said I was lucky - seemed to be OK.
Now seems to have less power.
You said it may have cooked a head gasket - probably not a warped head.

Now - today:
I found a small trail of coolant down the side of the block about 2-3" back behind the water pump (pass side)
Called my mechanic.
He said 1000.00 - for totally reworking the head (the only way he does it) - comments that the head WILL be warped.

I do not have a grand. My wife would faint.

Question:
With 170K (mostly highway) could I be safe just to try nothing more than a gasket set - and if not, what would you say might be the least I might have to go for.

Thanks for your help
Andrew in AL
