Lots of char under the head. Totally black. Plugs and all. 200

I just added an '83 245 AUTO with the B23 engine and 165k miles. I was told the only thing wrong with it is it needs a new head gasket. I ordered the whole kit for that engine. When I removed the head I noticed that there was quite a bit of black char in the chambers and on the plugs. Looked like oil burn. I am hoping this does not mean I need a ring job, if so it gets junked. Is it possible that the blown gasket would cause this charring. I really do not know how well the car was treated. Should I use a wire wheel to knock the char off? The body is great and the interior pretty good. I pray the engine is okay.
