engine is getting to hot, why? 200

Recently the temp gauge on my '79 244 dl started to rise. It used to stay put at 9 o'clock. Then I replaced the water pump and fan unit and now it rises all the way to the line just before HOT. Today I decided I should check the coolant level and was astonished to find the resevoir tank completly empty. I have had no sign of any kind of leak. There was still coolant in the engine, i could tell by squeezing the radiator tubes. How should I go about diagnosing this problem? Could it be just a bad thermostat, like its not opening? ----Paul
